College of New Jersey crushes FDU-Florham, 53-7;

RT Robert Keyes & O-Line block for 575 offensive yards

Ewing Twp., NJ - The Lions of The College of New Jersey(1-1) went from 0 to 53 in a matter of two games as they recovered from their opening shut-out loss to Muhlenburg to crush the Devils of FDU-Florham (1-1), 53-7.  Behind the blocking of our second cousin, Senior RT Robert Keyes, and the rest of TCNJ's offensive live, the NJAC school amassed 423 yards rushing and 142 yards passing.  Senior RB Dan Donacker cracked the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career with 107 yards.  QB Chris James ran for 67 and threw for 144 as the offensive line opened up big holes.  For Collegefootballfan.com, it was our first trip to the College of New Jersey campus where we met up with the rest of the Keyes family to enjoy the game.  It was the first of our two games on this Division III weekend.

    The Lions led 12-0 at the end of the first period on a a 6-yard run by Dornacker on the first series and on a 16-yard run by RB Walter Kumka.  FDU-Florham blocked both extra points.  An interception by LB Vinny Russo of FDU set up a Devil drive at New Jersey's 31.  QB Bill Winters ( 9-22, 76 yards) fired a 20-yard scoring pass to TE Ray Kwiatkowski to cut the Lions' lead,  12-7.  After an FDU punt deep in its own territory, NJ started a drive at the Devil 26.  James (12 of 21 for 144 yards) connected with WR Austin Misiura for an 8-yarder.  Lion HC Eric Hamilton called for the two-point conversion, but the play was negated on a downfield holding call on Cousin Robert who vehemently protested to the Referee.  Matt Dalessio finally converted for a long PAT and the 19-7 lead.  With :51 left in the half, James ran the QB draw 28 yards to take the lead for NJ, 26-7, before the teams headed to the locker-rooms.

     TCNJ's Dance unit performed for the half.  The little bit of the campus we saw before it turned dark impressed us.  It's a spacious, well-kept campus with brick buildings.  The playing surface at Lions' Stadium is one of few that still has the old Astro-turf as opposed to the newer Pro-turf we've seen at a lot of venues recently.  Phil and Debbie Keyes, Rob's parents, plan a tailgate at the final home game on Oct. 27 which we'll miss because we'll be in Reno for our trip to finalize the Goal.  They dread the thought of a cold, November 3 game up at Buffalo State reminiscing about the game in Cortland late last season where Debbie said it rained "sideways".  They told of how their other son, Mike, who's half the size of his 280-lb brother, attends Clemson.  Tickets in Death Valley are near-impossible to get there,  but if Mike can't get a ticket, he can always put on his ROTC uniform to get in and perform push-ups after every Tiger score which he did at the recent win against Florida State. Despite the Lions' 26-7 lead, Debbie warned that it's never over for the Lions.  She's seen them relinquish too many leads, but not on this day.

     The Lions faked a punt on their first drive of the half for a first down, and Dornacker punctuated the drive with a 14-yard run.  A sack of FDU's Winters resulted in a fumble recovery by DL Chris Tranchina to put the Lions at the  Devil's 28.  James connected on an outpass to RB Lee Jones who sped down the right sideline the entire 28-yards for a 39-7 NJ lead after a missed PAT.  Someone behind us wondered aloud who this FDU team had beaten.  Typically, the Alma Mater Dear's name was mispronounced.  "Juanita", someone responded.  Cousins Debbie and Kathy snickered as I had told them prior that I was looking for Robert to avenge Juniata's 20-17 OT loss to the Devils the week before!  Second team QB Bill Picatagi extended the Lion lead to 46-7 before the third period ended with a 7-yard run.

   Eric Hamilton played his second team going into the final period, but that didn't stop his charges from scoring again as RB Chris Misirua scored on a 28-yard run.  The PAT was flagged for five yards for illegal procedure as TCNJ was short a player.  Cousin Robert raced on to the field to take his position at RT.  His Dad Phil remarked it was the fastest he had seen him run!  The re-try capped the score at 53-7.  The Lions travel to play non-scholarship, Championship Division La Salle in their final non-conference game before stating their NJAC slate with Montclair, who we see face Spring field on this same weekend.  FDU looks to re-group against NJAC's William Paterson next week.

   We met up with Robert after the game along the field. The family challenged him if he was supposed to have been out there on the PAT.  Rob didn't realize that the first team got called out for the PAT.  The second team probably rarely practices PATs.  Deb and Phil remarked it was the most that he's spoken to them after a game.  He also didn't chug the Gatorade his Mom always gives him after the game.  His Aunt Kathy probably explained it best.  He didn't have to play in the final period as he normally does.  On to Montclair!
