Navy slams Irish in the New Meadowlands, 35-17 (abbreviated report due to an overseas business trip taken right after this game)
East Rutherford, NJ - Navy waded through the Iris defense like still waters throughout this game at the New Meadowlands Stadium scoring touchdowns on five of its first six possessions to throttle the Irish, 35-17. FB Alex Teich rambled for 210 yards on 26 carries. Ricky Dobbs ran for three TDs as the Mids rushed for 367 yards. Dobbs threw one of Navy's only two completions. Navy stopped ND's opening drive on the on-yard line and then marched the length of the field to take a 7-0 lead. The Mids played their best game of the season to go to 5-2 and drop Notre /Dame to 4-4. After seeing the Irish win the seven previous times we'd seen these two traditional rivals play, it was the first time we watched Navy win since they won in their two previous visits to South Bend , IN. Navy was impressive. Coach Kelly still has a lot of work cut out for his new team, but we still think he has them headed in the right direction.
GGA Steve Ciesla and I got to the parking lot for our first trip ever to the new stadium. We imbibed Bloody Mary's and beers. We were both surprised by QB Dayne Crist's slow release which resulted in two Navy INTs. What did Charlie Weis, the former NFL offensive genius, see in him to bring him to ND? He must have been an unfinished work-in-progress.
We liked the new stadium's scoreboards at field levels behind the benches. The light gray and dark gray seating mixed throughout the stadium was kind of dreary-looking though. Why not Giants' and Jets' colors?
Stopped at Charlie's Corner ( Krajewski's) in Secaucus for the first time in fifteen years after the game. The decor hasn't changed a bit. It's still great to go to after the game. We were the only two in there late in the afternoon. As the young bartender read a book on the other side of the bar, we watched games and checked out all the old pictures on the wall. We'll have to stop by again on another Saturday night when the "regular crowd shuffles in." They're not open on Sundays any more. |
