Air Force Blasts Pitiful Army, 43-7:

Leads 43-0 at Halftime

West Point, NY - In one of the worst performances by a 1-A football team seen in a long time, Army (3-7) gave away a football game with unforced fumbles, easy interceptions, and even a safety on a kick-off return to allow Air Force (4-4)  to take an early lead and rack up 43 points before the first half was over.  It became a comedy routine to most fans in the stands expecting to see a rivalry game between two fairly evenly matched teams battling for the prestigious Commander-In-Chief''s Trophy for supremacy among the three military academies.  Army, especially the offense, put on a lesson in futility instead.  Head Coach Bobby Ross fumed, most fans let at the half, CFF left at the end of the third quarter, and ESPN just prolonged the agony!  As one fan stated on the way out, Army should give everybody their money back!  We couldn't agree more.  What a waste of time!  And you know us, we always stay until the end, but the second half turned out to be nothing but a scrimmage.  On this evening, Army didn't belong on the same field with a team that lost to one-win San Diego State!  Not to hold anything against SD State or Air Force, but Army just did not come ready to play.  The defeat could not be blamed on the defense, as the offense was directly responsible for 16 of Air Force's first 23 points, and after that Air Force continuously took over on turnovers in Army territory. We can't remember a worse game that we've ever attended. And don't tell us that Army was looking past Air Force to its next game at Notre Dame in two weeks.  The Falcons host the Irish next week!

Army's D held the Air Force to -2 yard on its first series to force a short punt to take over at the Falcon's 36.  As Guest Game Analyst John Martens (Oswego State) observed, "Air Force might have just as well run it!" His words couldn't have been more prophetic as they moved at will the rest of the half!  Army drove to the 1/2-yard line.  Army players signaled TD, but to no avail.  Frosh QB Carson Williams, in only his second start, fumbled the snap.  Before he could even fall on the ball, USAF LB Adam Zanotti had scooped it up and was on his way to a 99.5-yard TD run.  Zach Sasser's PAT  made it an unexpected 7-0 lead for the Falcons.  Oh, well!  We knew Army could move the ball, so we thought.  After exchanging punts on short series, Army RB Wesley McMahand fumbled and Air Force resumed play at the Army 46.  QB Shaun Carney converted a first down on fourth and one before Q1 ended.  Then the fireworks began!

RB Chad Hall (16 rushes for 93 yards)  burst over the left side for a 19-yd TD run.  Sasser added the point for a 14-0 Falcon lead.  Army return man, Plebe (Frosh) Damian Hunter picked up the ensuing kick in the end zone, hesitated, ran out, and then was tackled at his own 10.  CB Garret Rybak intercepted Williams next pass stepping in front of the receiver and seemingly zoomed into the end zone for a 26-yard return for a TD.  However, a review indicated that he was out at the one-yard line.  No problem.  FB Ryan Williams took it in for the 21-0 lead.  Plebe Hunter was back for the next kickoff.  He mishandled the kick which went into the end zone, picked it up, came out of the end zone, ran to his left, and cut back into the end zone where he was subsequently tackled by Frosh FS Chris Thomas!   Two more points for Air Force.  With a 23-point lead, Air Force got the ball back on its own 43 after the subsequent punt.  The Army defense was getting worn down as Air Force 's time of possession in the first half was eventually 18:20.  This drive resulted in a 6-yard TD run by Carney (13 rushes for 35 yards, 2 of 4 passing for 44 yards)  for a lead of 30-0.  Williams threw another pick on Army's next series as LB John Rabold took it to Army's 26.  As bad as Army was, nothing could go wrong for Air Force.  A fumble into the end zone was recovered by RB Beau Suder after an 8-yard run for the eventual Air Force TD, 36-0, with 1:24 remaining.  Sasser' PAT deflected off the right upright.  We thought that could become the turning point to the game!  Army started from their own 24.  LB John Rabold thwarted the Army comeback right there and then with his second pick.  One Army fan returned to his seat with his kids and their hot chocolate.  With a smile on his face, he  said, "You can't leave any time during this game.  There's too much scoring!" Especially after the imminent Army turnover.    With :36 left in the half, Carney dropped back and hauled a 36-yard TD pass to WR Spencer Armstrong.  That was the icing on the cake, 43-0, Halftime!

We watched the Army band perform at the half as fans exited for buses to go back to the parking areas.  On a cold night at a miserable game, there wasn't much thought of staying around for any post game festivities.  We watched the teams run out the clock for a scoreless third period and then left to catch our bus to get the car to get some dinner at a diner. No sense filling out any more gory details here.  We read this morning that Army scored on a TD pass from former starter David Pevoto to Corey Anderson with 1:39 left.  We also read that Shaun Carney was disappointed not to get 50 points, and that a fuming and probably embarrassed Bobby Ross sent his defensive coordinator to the post-game press conference.  Army heads to ND in two weeks.  They must need the money, but then you realize the cadets have an exclusive contract with ESPN for all their home games.  How could you not notice.? This game had the most and longest TV time-outs on record.  It was a good thing Mrs. CFF didn't come.  She'd have shot the guy with the red suit and head set herself with one of the weapons off one of the soldiers guarding the parking lot. Security was heavy at Michie with troops carrying loaded weapons and lines lasting 20-minutes long to get every one frisked as they entered the game Air Force plays the Irish in Colorado Springs next week and should offer more of a challenge than Army to say the least.  With games after that remaining against Utah, UNLV, and TCU, Air Force will be pressed for a sixth win for a bowl bid.  Navy's in the driver's seat for The Trophy with its 24-17 win over the USAFA earlier in the season.  We're going to see Penn at Princeton later today where we hope we see two teams play for a piece of Ivy, something that means more to them than the C-I-C Trophy means to Army evidently!
